Myths & Truth

Myth 8

Lab-grown diamonds all come from coal-powered factories in China and India.

Truth

A large fraction of all gem grade diamonds are produced outside of China and India. Plus the leading producers of lab grown diamonds are now using zero-emission energy for a zero carbon footprint.

Lab diamond producers have achieved ever more energy efficient technology – an order of magnitude less energy required per carat today than ten years ago.

(Most diamond grit / powder is indeed produced in China. But large diamond crystals are being produced all around the world including Europe and the United States.)

There has been little progress in making mining more energy efficient.

Jewelry brands such as VRAI exclusively source rough diamond grown in America with zero-emission energy so their marketing can highlight one exact place of origin.

Misleading Marketing by Diamond Miners

The diamond mining cartel likes to get journalists to mention lab diamonds being all Chinese and Indian because that’s what consumers associate with low cost and low quality and floods of volume.

As a matter of fact, Africa is more foreign to American consumers than India; African autocrats are anything but democracy in India; and the largest producers of gem size diamonds are not based in China or India but in the United States and Europe.
